Kikongo (or Kongo) is a Bantu language of central Africa spoken by 7 million Bakongo and Bandundu people in the Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola. Because Kikongo was also the language of many of the slaves taken from Africa to the Americas in the 17th and 18th centuries, it also formed the basis for the ritual languages, creoles, and patois of African communities in the Caribbean, Brazil, and the United States. Kikongo was the first African language written in Roman letters, and a translation of the Christian bible was completed and published in Kikongo in 1905.
