Bantu is the collective name for more than 500 languages in the Niger-Congo family spoken throughout Africa. Swahili is the most famous of these. Most speakers live east and south of what is now Nigeria, and their languages are classified into sixteen regional Sub-Saharan regions. The name derives from Wilhelm Friedrich Immanuel Bleek who created the term in 1875 to describe the people and languages of the area he studied. It comes from the prefix (ba) and suffix (ntu) used in the area to refer to people. Thus, Bantu was meant to signify “people” and their languages. Some Bantu words that found their way into English include jumbo, gumbo, and zombie.
