Dzongkha is the official language of Bhutan and is spoken by 130,000 native speakers. An additional 470,000 use Dzongkha as a second language. However, the language is largely confined to Bhutan and its neighboring regions and so is quite isolated. Beginning in the 1960s, Dzongkha became the language of education in Bhutan. Both Dzongkha and Tibetan share the same literary language, though the spoken forms are not mutually intelligible. The name Dzongkha derives from the names of the fortress-like monasteries where the language was spoken in the 17th century. The language is written in a Bhutanese form of the Tibetan script.
