The flag of Angola was adopted in 1975 and is in a 2:3 ratio. It is composed of two equal horizontal stripes, the uppermost bright red and the lowermost black. Superimposed in the center of the flag is half a golden cogwheel, with the convex side of the curve facing right and down. The cog is crossed by a gold machete facing up and left, and a gold star takes up the space between the tip of the machete and the cog. The symbol is meant to invoke the Soviet hammer and sickle icon
