The Canadian National Flag, known popularly as the “maple leaf flag,” was adopted in 1965. The flag uses a 1:2 ratio and is composed of three vertical stripes, the central one being twice as wide as the other two. The central stripe is white, and the other two are red. Centered within the white stripe is a stylized red maple leaf, a symbol deriving from a visit by the Prince of Wales in 1860 when Canadian residents were asked to wear maple leaves to identify themselves, while Englishmen wore roses and Scots wore thistles.
