The flag of the Dominican Republic uses the colors of the Haitian flag and was adopted in 1844. It is composed of a large white cross extending horizontally and vertically to the edge of the flag and dividing it into four quarters. The upper left and lower right quarters are blue and the upper right and lower left quarters are red. In the center of the cross and wholly contained within it center are the arms of the Republic. These consist of a red, white, and blue shield bordered by scrolls on top and bottom and by and olive branch on the left and palm on the right. The national motto and name of the country appear on the scrolls.
