The flag of East Timor originated in the 1975 independence movement and was formally adopted when the country achieved independence from Indonesia in 2002. The flag uses a ratio of 1:2 and is composed of a red field on which is superimposed a yellow isosceles triangle flush with the left side of the flag and extending to a point touching the center of the flag. A black isosceles triangle is superimposed upon the yellow triangle, sharing the same base but with an apex reaching only one-third of the width of the flag. A white, five-pointed star is superimposed upon the black triangle.
