The flag of Greece was adopted in 1975 based on an 1822 design and uses a ratio of 2:3. The flag is composed of nine equal stripes which alternate blue and white, there being five blue and four white. A blue square equal to the width of five stripes occupies the upper left corner. A white cross with arms equal to the width of a stripe is centered in the square and extends to the edges of the square. The cross represents the Greek Orthodox Church, and the nine stripes stand for the nine syllables of the Greek motto.
