The flag of Italy was adopted following the abolition of the monarchy in 1946. The flag replaces a similar flag which bore the coat of arms of the House of Savoy and which originated in the tricolor of Italian unity in the Napoleonic era and based on the French flag. The Italian flag is composed of three vertical stripes of equal width, which are green, white, and red from left to right. The colors derive from the uniforms of Milanese soldiers in the National Guard, and are not, contrary to popular opinion, based on the colors of Italian food.
