The flag of Japan, known as the Hinomaru, was adopted in 1868 following the Meiji Restoration. The flag uses a 2:3 ratio and features a white field on which is centered a red disc three-fifths the length of the flag. The red disc represents the sun after Japan’s name as the “Land of the Rising Sun.” Earlier legislation set the ratio at 7:10 or 2:3 depending on use, but in 1999 the 2:3 flag was confirmed as official.
