The flag of Kenya was adopted at independence in 1963. It uses a 2:3 ratio and is composed of five unequal stripes in a ratio of 6:1:6:1:6. The top stripe is black, followed in descending order by white, red, white, and green stripes. Superimposed and centered is a large red warrior’s shield with decoration atop crossed spears. The colors are symbolic: black for an African majority government, red for blood, and green for natural wealth.
