The Laotian flag was adopted in 1975 and had served as the flag of the Laotian Communist Party before its adoption as the national standard. The flag uses a 2:3 ratio and is composed of three unequal horizontal stripes, the center stripe being twice the width of the two outer stripes. The center stripe is red, and the outer stripes are blue. Centered in the flag and wholly contained within the blue stripe is a white disc. Red stands for the blood shed for freedom, blue for wealth, and the white disc for the moon and unity.
