The flag of Latvia was adopted in 1990 and uses a ratio of 1:2. The flag is composed of three unequal horizontal stripes, the middle stripe being one-half the width of the other two. From top to bottom, the stripes are maroon, white, and maroon. The maroon (officially called red) stands for the blood shed for freedom, while the white stands for hope.
