The flag of Mexico was officially adopted in 1968, but the origins of the flag stretch back to Independence, though the exact origins are unclear. The flag uses a 4:7 ratio and is divided in to three equal vertical stripes, which from left to right are green, white, and red. Centered within the center stripe are the arms of Mexico, which feature and eagle clutching a snake and standing on a cactus, an image derived from ancient Aztec mythology.
