The flag of the Philippines was designed in 1897 and first used in 1898. It became the official flag of the country after its independence from Spain, and then again after its independence from the United States and the end of the Japanese occupation. The flag consists of two equal horizontal stripes. The top stripe is blue and the bottom red. A white equilateral triangle whose base is the left side of the flag extends to an apex centered where the two stripes meet. On the white triangle are three five-pointed stars positioned in the corners surrounding a centered eight-rayed sun.
