The flag of Spain was adopted in 1981 following the end of the fascist government. The flag is in a 2:3 ratio and is composed of three unequal horizontal stripes. The center stripe is yellow and twice as wide as the other two stripes, which are red. In the yellow stripe and offset to the left of center is the royal coat of arms, which depicts a quartered shield bearing symbols of Spain and a blue escutcheon with fleurs-de-lis symbolizing the Bourbon monarchy. The shield stands between the Pillars of Hercules and below a royal crown.
