The flag of Turkey has been used since 1844 and was officially adopted in 1936. The flag uses a 2:3 ratio and consists of a red field on which a white Islamic crescent whose opening faces right is positioned to the left of center. Outside the opening of the crescent is a five-pointed white star arranged so that two of its points face the points terminating the arms of the crescent. The flag may originate with Constantine who added a Marian star to the crescent moon of Diana at the founding of Constantinople, which city became the Ottoman Turkish capital in 1453.
