The flag of the United Kingdom was adopted in 1801 based on a design used since the union of England and Scotland. That flag was changed in 1801 to incorporate a symbol for Ireland, that year made an equal member of the United Kingdom. The flag uses 1:2 ratio and consists of a blue field on which is superimposed a thick diagonal white cross of St. Andrew on which is superimposed a thinner diagonal red cross of St. Patrick. Over both is superimposed a thick red cross of St. George edged in white. The three crosses represent Scotland, Ireland, and England respectively. The flag is called the Union Flag but is best known as the Union Jack.
