Frisian is a collective name for a group of languages spoken by about half a million people on around the southern end of the North Sea, in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. Frisian is a well-studied language because it is closely related to Old English, and is in fact one of the English language’s closest living relatives. In addition Frisian features many loan words from Dutch and Danish. The three main Frisian languages are North Frisian, spoken in northern Germany; West Frisian, spoken in the Netherlands; and Saterland Frisian, spoken in Saxony in Germany. The two Frisians spoken in Germany are protected minority languages, and West Frisian is an official language of the Netherlands.
