Gikuyu (also spelled Kikuyu) is a Bantu language spoken by the Kikuyu people of Kenya. There are about 5.3 million speakers of Gikuyu, which is a part of the Niger-Congo language family. Its speakers represent about 22% of the Kenyan population. The language is divided into four major dialects, all of which are mutually intelligible. Gikuyu is written in the Latin alphabet, and there is a notable literary tradition in Gikuyu. Prof. Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s Wizard of the Crow is a well-known example and also the longest written work in Gikuyu—and indeed the longest written work in any Sub-Saharan language.
