Lak is a language found in Russia where it is spoken by around 150,000 people in the autonomous region of Dagestan. In that region it is one of six literary languages, and it is written using the Cyrillic alphabet, though it had formerly been written using the Arabic and then Roman alphabets. The language has five dialects: Kumkuk, Arakul, Shadnin, Kosrekh, and Vitskhi. The dialect of the capital, Kumkuk, is the most prestigious and the one used in literary composition. Lak developed using loan words from neighboring languages, and Russian has been the most influential, supplying much of the languages technical and scientific vocabulary.
