Lozi is a Bantu language spoken by approximately half a million people, mostly of the Lozi ethnic group, in the country of Zambia and surrounding areas including Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. It is especially prevalent in the area around the Zambian city of Livingstone. As a language, Lozi is a combination of two other tongues, Luyana and Kololo and developed after a period of mass migration brought speakers of those two languages into contact with one another. The Kololo conquered the Luyana, and then the Luyana overthrew the Kololo. In the meantime, their languages merged into a hybrid now known as Lozi.
