Maori (or Te Reo) is the language of the native Maori people of New Zealand, spoken by about 165,000 speakers. Maori is a Polynesian language closely related to Tahitian and more distantly related to Hawaiian and Marquesan. Maori also serves as one of New Zealand's three official languages, the other two being English and New Zealand Sign Language. It gained official status only in 1987, but is now commonly used in New Zealand government. In 1994, the New Zealand government took official responsibility for preserving Maori, which it has done through various initiatives, including the funding of a Maori-language television station.
