Ndebele (also known as Southern Ndebele or isiNdebele) is a Bantu language spoken by approximately 600,000 speakers in South Africa, primarily the amaNdebele. The language is divided into two dialects, Northern Transvaal Ndebele and Southern Transvaal Ndebele. A third dialect, Northern Ndebele, is more closely related to Zulu than to Southern Ndebele and is not usually classified with the southern variant. Ndebele is one of South Africa's eleven official languages, and it derives from the language spoken by the Ndebele tribe when they arrived in the area around Pretoria in the 16th century. The language was suppressed during the colonial period.
