About St. Catharines
The city of St. Catharines has a population of around 131,000 people within a metropolitan area of over 300,000. Only 10% of the population is a visible minority, and the city has only a 58% employment rate. Poverty and obesity have taken a heavy toll on the city, particularly after the loss of many manufacturing jobs that once provided residents with a reliable path to a middle class lifestyle. St. Catharines was founded by a group of Loyalists who fled the fledgling United States following the American Revolution. Later, the city became an active center of the abolitionist movement and a place of refuge for slaves escaping the United States before the American Civil War. St. Catharines was incorporated as a town in 1845 and as a city in 1876. The city is well known for the Welland Canal, a major transportation artery through the city. The city also has bus and rail service.
