Shona is a Bantu language spoken by approximately 7 million people, primarily the Shona people, in Zimbabwe and southern Zambia. Shona dialects are also spoken by a number of tribes whose languages are either similar to or closely related to the version spoken by the Shona themselves. These groups include the Zezuru, Karanga, Manyika, Ndau, and Korekore. Though English is one of Zimbabwe’s official languages, Shona is also official there and spoken by more than 80% of the population. The written version of Shona was standardized in the first half of the twentieth century and became official in 1950. The first Shona novel was published in 1957.
