In Monmouthshire, North Wales, victims of domestic abuse will have the ability to access interpretation and translation services, which will be the first of its kind in Chepstow. An average of 35% of violent events reported to police in 2008 are domestic abuse related. Therefore, Monmouthshire county council is working with the Black Association of Women Stepping Out (BAWSO) to give support to women and children from black, minority, and ethnic communities in the area.
Rachel Allen, Monmouthshire county council's domestic abuse coordinator stated, "There is a misconception that violent crime is not a problem in the county. This is simply not the case." Women in ethnic minority communities often feel more isolated from the world because of cultural or language barriers. Therefore, the free county service will give access to interpretation and translation in over 30 languages.
Unfortunately, many women suffer in silence, so the true impact of domestic abuse on the community is difficult to gauge. Allen says this new service will offer support and help to women that will allow them to leave their abusive or violent relationships.
