On June 27, 2008, it was announced that Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will be conducting a study entitled, "Interpretation and Translation Service Needs in the Delivery of Immigrant Settlement Programs." The study will identify needs within the system regarding language training, which is important for the development of the immigrant needs in the realm of language and communication.
The study will also investigate the current delivery of interpreter services available to immigration services; review the methods of translation and interpretation in other sectors and jurisdictions; identify gaps in the system; and recommend improvements to translation and interpreting services.
In addition, the CIC will be using interviews, focus groups, and surveys to gather information regarding the subject. The Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI) and an advisory committee comprised of experts in the interpretation and translation industry will also be involved to aid in the research.
