Over twenty members of the Muslim community were named in the Queen's Birthday Honours on Friday, for their contributions to their community and society in general. Among them were doctors, barristers, professors, and translator Muhammad Abdel Haleem.
Abdul Haleem is a prominent professor of Islamic studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and is one of only seven Muslims who have been made an Order of the British Empire (OBE). He is the Editor of the Qur’anic Studies Journal and has published numerous books and journals.
Abdul Haleem believes his translation of the Qur'an has been his "biggest achievement. It is a breakthrough in translation and I have done something important in making the Qur'an easier to understand. I have corrected some crucial terms to correct the image of Islam and to show that Islam is not a violent religion."
He, along with his esteemed Muslim peers is pleased that professional members of the Jewish, Hindu, and Sikh communities will also be honored for their societal contributions.
