In Caswell County, North Carolina, there is a dispute as to whether bilingual interpreters and translators should be given a raise. Currently, the rates are $1 for hourly on-call, $34 for a regular visit, and $51 for an extended visit. The increase would make the rates $2 for on-call, $40 per visit, and $60 for extended visits.
In addition, Dr. Fred Moore, the director of the county health department, who requested the increase, also asked for a four percent pay increase for those who had assumed supervisory roles and a four percent pay increase for bilingual staff.
The county commissioners had mixed feelings about the increases, which was evident in the manner in which they voted for Moore's proposals. Those who voted "no" believed that there were not many Spanish-speaking clients in the county. However, other commissioners stated that these individuals are not being served by the county because they do not speak English and are unable to utilize services.
In a final vote, the motion to raise the pay of bilinguals was denied, therefore, the original rates of pay are in effect for now.
