On September 15th and 16th, a "think tank" will take place in Monterey, California to discuss how to improve the quality of medical care that is given to patients who do not speak English or are limited-English speakers.
The Global Advisory Council (GAC) was formed in April 2008 and its members are health care and medical interpreters, language access advocates, interpreter associations, hospitals, and other language service providers. In the upcoming meeting, the GAC will attempt to standardize training and testing guidelines for medical interpreters.
An organizer, Winnie Heh states, "We are extremely pleased to host such an impressive group of national and international industry thought leaders for this first GAC meeting. We are confident that the input and international perspective of the Global Advisory Council will help eliminate the costly, and often life-threatening, language barriers that are still present in today's hospitals."
