The classic Shakespearean play "Othello" is currently being produced by a Filipino production company. The name of the play is now, "Otelo, Ang Moro ng Venecia" and is being directed by Ricky Abad.
A former translation of the play by the late Tagalog factionalist and prose stylist Rogelio Sicat and his daughter, Luna Sicat-Cleto will be used for the production, although much is lost in translation. Nevertheless, critics believe the imagery of the play remains the same and vivid in this colorful production.
In addition, Abad has staged the play in a manner that mitigates language deficiencies with a taut, interesting, tale. The play has been successful, despite the fact that most thought the play would flounder due to the issues with language.
The translation is accomplished and combined with the Abad's talents, it is likely "Otelo…" will have a long life in the Philippine theater.
