Interpreters and translators were recruited to help those suffering the brunt of Hurricane Ike. Many needed telephone interpretation for emergency services to enable communication for those in need at the devastation site whose first language was not English.
The interpreters used for this operation were also trained for emergency response situations and high-stress activity to make sure callers obtained a quick connection, confidentiality regarding calls, and reliable handling of information.
The translation and interpretation staff was made up of individuals who spoke a number of languages to ensure those who needed help would have access to it. Interpreters will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week until authorities determine the area has been contained and such services are no longer needed.
