Tuvaluan is a Polynesian language spoken by approximately 13,000 people worldwide, 10,000 of whom live on the Polynesian island of Tuvalu. The language is closely related to the major Polynesian tongues, including Samoan, Hawaiian, and Maori. Tuvaluan was heavily influenced by Samoan during the period of contact with Christian missionaries, as these missionaries spoke Samoan. Tuvaluan has five vowels and 10 or 11 consonants (depending on how they are counted). There are two major dialects of Tuvaluan, Northern Tuvaluan and Southern Tuvaluan, and they are mutually intelligible. Other than the bible, there are few books in Tuvaluan, but there is one newspaper published in the tongue.
