Ulster Scots (sometimes called Scots-Irish or Hibernian) is a type of the Scots language spoken by 30,000 people in Northern Ireland and 10,000 more in the Republic of Ireland. The name “Ulster” Scots refers to the province of Ulster where the majority of speakers live. The language derives from that spoken by the Scottish people who settled in Ulster beginning in the 15th century. Today, Ulster Scots and the Scots spoken in Scotland are still quite similar, though Ulster Scots features a greater amount of borrowing from English than does its Scottish counterpart. Most linguists consider Ulster Scots to be a dialect of Scots, though some have attempted to classify it as its own language.
