Yoruba has more than 15 dialects that form a continuum across West Africa, and the name Yoruba can also be used to refer to the standardized written Yoruba language. The language was primarily oral until 1819 when an English diplomat collected the first examples of the Yoruba language in written form. In 1875, missionaries developed a standard written form of the language.
