About Oakville
The city of Oakville is a suburb of the city of Toronto, and its 183,000 residents form part of the much larger Greater Toronto Area. The city was founded to take advantage of nearby waterways. Its early economy focused on shipbuilding, timber shipping, and agriculture. In time, basket-making became the city’s leading industry, but industrialization led to a fluorescence of manufacturing. In time, Oakville became of the location of Ford’s Canadian operations and several oil refineries. While eight out of ten residents of the city are white, the percentage of visible minorities is steadily increasing. Today, the largest minority groups include South Asians at six percent, Chinese at three percent, and Black Canadians at two percent. While 70 percent of Oakville residents speak English as their first language a significant portion of the population speaks other languages at home, including French, Polish, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, all with about 1.4 to 1.8 percent of the population speaking each.
