About Quebec City
Quebec City is the second largest city in the province of Quebec and also the capital of the province. It has more than half a million residents, of whom 95 percent speak French as their first language. Quebec City is famous for the Old World, European feel of its architecture, particularly in the Palace Royale and Vieux-Québec districts. The city was founded on the site where Jacques Cartier built in 1535. Samuel de Champlain founded the city itself in 1608, and it was from his settlement that the country of Canada takes its name. The city gained its present moniker only later. The city has served as the capital of six different political units: French Canada, New France, the French Province of Quebec, Lower Canada, the Province of Canada, and the modern Province of Quebec. In 2002, the city expanded by incorporating 12 formerly independent towns, of which two later returned to independent status.
