About Vaughan

Over the past 25 years, the city of Vaughan has doubled in population, making it the fifth largest city in the province and the seventeenth largest in all of Canada. The city is Canada’s fastest growing, increasing in population 80% between 1996 and 2006. The city was named for Benjamin Vaughan, the British official who in 1783 signed a peace treaty with the United States. Most of the city’s early settlers were Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants from the United States, who brought with them their German heritage and culture. Vaughan experienced its first period of explosive growth after World War II, when waves of immigrants from Italy and Eastern Europe settled in the city. More than one in four residents of Vaughan is a visible minority. The city is one of the most religious in Canada. In Vaughan 46% of residents speak English as a first language, followed by Italian at 14%, Russian at 5.6%, and Spanish at 2.6%.
