About Waterloo

One of the three cities of the Tri-City area, Waterloo is located next to Kitchener and has a population of less than 100,000 people. The city was founded atop land assigned to the Iroquois Confederacy but sold by them to British settlers. The first residents of Waterloo were Mennonites from Pennsylvania in the United States, who came after 1804. The town was named after the site of Napoleon’s defeat in Belgium shortly after the end of the Napoleonic Wars. After the war, German immigrants settled the area. Waterloo became a village in 1857, a town in 1876, and a city in 1948. Due to the city’s large number of high tech and manufacturing firms, the city has higher incomes and property values than the national average. Fewer than one in four residents of Waterloo is a visible minority, with East Asians and South Asians comprising the largest minority groups within the city.
