About Houston

The city of Houston was founded in 1836 and named after the Texas hero Sam Houston. The city was incorporated the next year and served as a temporary capital of the Republic of Texas. Before the Civil War, Houston became a major cotton exporting center, and as the nineteenth century moved on, the city began to benefit from the increased demand for oil. The twentieth century was the century of oil, and the economic stimulus of World War II and the availability of air conditioning turned Houston into a major American city. As a major port and educational center, Houston has become a multicultural city. Its residents speak more than ninety different languages, and almost half of the city’s population are visible minorities. African Americans are the largest minority group, with 24% of the city’s population. Other large minorities include Hispanics and Asians, while mixed race individuals have also increased in number in recent years.
