About Los Angeles
Los Angeles is often known as the City of Angels. It is the second-largest city in the United States and the largest in California. It is home to nearly 3.8 million people.
The city is also a very old one, founded in 1781 as a Spanish colonial city. It passed to Mexico in 1821, to the California Republic in 1846, and to the United States in 1848 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. The city was incorporated in 1850.
Los Angeles grew slowly after the arrival of the Interstate Highway System. This growth was mainly due to the rapid development of the manufacturing sector during and after World War II. The highway system also made it easier for people to travel to and from the city.
The city is incredibly diverse. Its residents hail from more than 140 countries and speak an astonishing 224 different languages. More than half of the city's residents are minorities.
Nearly half of them are of Hispanic origin. Spanish is the most spoken language in the city after English, and Catholicism is the most practiced religion in Los Angeles.
