Six Fortune 500 companies are based in the city of Milwaukee, making it the fifth largest concentration of such firms in the United States. The city’s most rapidly growing pools of positions, however, are found in the service and managerial fields. Health care is the city’s largest industry, employing more than one in four residents. The city also has major industries in insurance and retail. It is however synonymous with brewing, which historically was an important industry in the city.

About Milwaukee

The city of Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin and one synonymous with brewing. German immigrants to the city set up breweries and turned the city into a center for the beer industry. Although the power and influence of Milwaukee’s brewers has declined, the reputation of the city as a beer capital survives. The city today has nearly 600,000 residents within a metropolitan area of two million people. Recently, the city has seen an economic revitalization marked by new investment, new companies, and a great deal of new construction in the downtown area. The city is known for its large gay population and gay-friendly environment. About 45 percent of the population is white, 40 percent black, 3.5 percent Asian, and 3.5 percent mixed race. However, the population is not well integrated and several studies have found that Milwaukee’s population live segregated lives with less interaction between races than elsewhere.
