The flag of India was adopted at independence in 1947. The flag is composed of three horizontal stripes of equal width. The top stripe is a shade of saffron between yellow and orange. The middle stripe is white, and the bottom stripe is green. Centered in the white stripe and wholly contained within it is a blue 24-spoked wheel known as a chakra. The saffron stands for Hinduism, the green for Islam, and the white for peace.
