The flag of Thailand was adopted in 1917 and uses a ratio of 2:3. The flag consists of five horizontal stripes: four equal in width and a central stripe twice the width of the other four. From top to bottom the stripes are red, white, blue, white, and red in proportion 1:1:2:1:1. Legend has it that the flag was adopted so that Thailand could never be seen to be in distress, since the flag could not be hung upside down, the traditional symbol of distress.
