Ibsen's classic play, A Doll's House, gets a fresh, new flavor at the Theatre Royal in Bath, England. Although the play was written in Norwegian in 1879, Stephen Mulrine has enlivened the dialogue with a new energy and pace.
The story consists of a wife who uses her feminine wiles to get what she wants, but lacks self-awareness. She has engaged in fraudulent activity and is in danger of being discovered, therefore, she is fraught with anxiety. Her husband is flippant, and treats his wife as a child. This creates an intriguing story that is made even more interesting by Mulrine's translation.
The play has been recreated in theatres around the world for years, usually with an audience that is comprised of an older demographic. This new translation from Norwegian to English is expected to attract a younger audience who will have a chance to experience and enjoy Ibsen's story as well.
